The Paradox of “Always On”
Parking garages and tunnels have a unique operational profile: they run 8,760 hours a year. Yet, for 60% of that time, they are empty. Facility managers face a brutal choice: burn cash to keep lights on, or turn them off and risk liability.
The Burn Rate
A standard T8 fluorescent tube draws 58W (including ballast). In a 500-fixture garage, that’s 254,000 kWh annually. At $0.15/kWh, you are burning $38,000 a year just to light up concrete when no one is there.
The “Black Hole” Risk
Poor lighting uniformity creates shadows between pillars. These “Black Holes” blind security cameras and provide cover for theft or assault. A single liability lawsuit can cost more than a complete lighting retrofit.
Maintenance Nightmare
Replacing a flickering tube in an active driveway is dangerous and disruptive. It often requires closing lanes and hiring lifts. Yuanhui’s LED fixtures are sealed for life (IP66), eliminating maintenance for 5+ years.
Microwave “Smart-Dim” Technology
Why PIR Fails: Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors rely on heat signatures. In a hot underground garage or a car with a cold engine, PIR is unreliable. It also requires a direct line of sight, meaning it can’t “see” around concrete columns.
The Microwave Advantage: Yuanhui utilizes 5.8GHz Microwave Doppler Sensors. These emit radar waves that penetrate exhaust fumes, dust, and even thin non-metal partitions. They detect the motion of a car or pedestrian instantly, regardless of temperature.
Dual-Stage Logic:
- Standby Mode: 20% brightness (4W). Maintains safety & CCTV visibility.
- Active Mode: 100% brightness (20W). Triggers instantly upon motion.
- Hold Time: Stays bright for 5 mins after motion stops, then dims.
Engineering for Tunnel Safety
Driving into a tunnel at 80 km/h is a physiological shock. The human eye takes seconds to adapt from bright daylight (100,000 Lux) to a dark tunnel interior. This creates a dangerous “Black Hole Effect” at the entrance where drivers are effectively blind.
Yuanhui designs Tunnel Lighting according to CIE 88 and BS 5489-1 standards, breaking the tunnel into four critical luminance zones.
Request Tunnel Simulation-
01. Threshold Zone
The Entrance. Requires extremely high luminance (L20) to match outside brightness. We use high-power 200W-300W modules here to ease the eye’s transition.
-
02. Transition Zone
Adaptation. Lighting levels are gradually stepped down (e.g., 100% -> 50% -> 20%) over the first 100-200 meters to allow the pupil to dilate safely.
-
03. Interior Zone
The Long Run. Constant, flicker-free illumination (typically 5-10 cd/m²) is maintained. Anti-glare optics prevent the “stroboscopic effect” on moving wheels.
Optics That Eliminate Shadows
In low-ceiling environments (2.4m – 3m), a narrow beam creates a “spotlight” effect with dark walls. This is unsafe.
Generic 120° Cone Beam
The Problem: Creates a “Spotlight Effect”. Light hits the floor but leaves walls and corners in darkness. Security cameras cannot capture faces clearly due to low vertical illuminance.
Yuanhui 150° Batwing Beam
The Solution: Our lens pushes light outwards. This uniform “Batwing” distribution illuminates pillars and walls, eliminating shadows and ensuring compliance with BS 5489-1 safety standards.
Vandal & Weather Proof
Parking garages are harsh. They face exhaust soot, high-pressure washdowns, and occasional vandalism.
-
IK10 Impact Rating:
Our polycarbonate diffusers can withstand a direct hit from a baseball bat or accidental impact from a car antenna without shattering. -
IP66 Sealing:
Hermetically sealed against moisture and fine dust (soot). You can power-wash the fixture directly during cleaning cycles. -
Anti-Corrosion:
Full PC body construction means no rust, even in coastal garages or areas with high exhaust acidity.
Cut Installation Time by 40%
In large-scale parking projects, labor costs often exceed the cost of the fixtures. Wiring 500 individual lights involves thousands of wire strippings and junction box connections. Yuanhui engineers engineered the “Quick-Link” System to solve this.
-
01. Internal Through-Wiring (Daisy Chain)
Forget external junction boxes. Our fixtures come pre-wired with internal 3-core or 5-core (1.5mm² – 2.5mm²) copper cables. You simply connect Line A to Line B inside the fixture. This allows you to power up to 40 fixtures in a single continuous run, drastically reducing cabling materials and labor hours.
-
02. Twist & Lock End Caps
No screwdrivers needed. The end caps of our Vapor Tight series utilize a patented twist-lock mechanism. Installers can open the fixture to access the terminal block in seconds, not minutes. This speed accumulates into massive savings over a 1000-unit project.
-
03. Versatile Mounting
Whether you are retrofitting onto existing conduit, mounting directly to concrete ceilings, or suspending from cables, our Stainless Steel 316 Mounting Clips slide along the body of the fixture. This means you don’t need to drill new holes if the old ones don’t match; simply slide the clips to align with existing anchors.

Engineering & Compliance FAQ
Do I need emergency battery backups in a parking garage?
Yes. According to NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code) and BS 5266, parking garages are classified as “Windowless Structures.” In the event of a grid failure, you must provide a minimum of 1 Lux (or 0.5 Lux depending on local code) along the path of egress (escape routes) for 90 minutes.
Yuanhui offers an integrated Emergency (EM) Kit option. A high-temp LiFePO4 battery is built directly into the housing. It automatically detects power loss and switches the LED to a 3W-8W emergency mode, ensuring compliance without the need for separate, ugly emergency bulkhead lights.
Which Color Temperature (CCT) is safer: 4000K or 6500K?
For parking garages, we strongly recommend 4000K to 5000K.
5000K (Daylight White): Provides the highest contrast and perceived brightness, which is excellent for security cameras (CCTV) to capture license plates and faces clearly. It feels safer and cleaner.
6500K (Blue-White): Often feels harsh and clinical. It creates more glare for drivers transitioning from a dark street.
3000K (Warm White): Generally discouraged for garages as it can feel “dim” and makes colors (like car paint) harder to distinguish.
Can your lights withstand concrete ceiling dampness?
Underground parking lots are notoriously damp due to condensation and ground seepage. A standard metal fixture will rust. Yuanhui’s Vapor Tight Series uses a full Polycarbonate (PC) body which is non-corrosive. Furthermore, we use a poured silicone gasket (not foam) to achieve a true IP66 rating, preventing moisture from entering the driver compartment even in 90% humidity environments.
